Direct Support Professional / Caregiver

Sanctuary Day Program is hiring dependable and compassionate team members to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a day program setting.

At Sanctuary Day Program, all staff members are expected to function as Direct Support Professionals while on duty. This includes caregivers, drivers, administrative staff, supervisors, and contractors. No role is exempt from helping with member care, safety, supervision, cleaning, and support.

Position Summary

Staff are responsible for providing direct, hands-on care, supervision, and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

All staff must actively participate in:

  • Personal care

  • Safety monitoring

  • Behavioral support

  • Cleaning and sanitation

  • Emergency response

  • Transportation support when assigned

Administrative or transportation duties do not replace or reduce direct care responsibilities.

Core Responsibilities

Direct Care

Staff must assist with Activities of Daily Living, including:

  • Toileting and diaper changing

  • Feeding and mealtime support

  • Hygiene support

  • Handwashing and grooming assistance

  • Mobility and positioning support

  • Hands-on assistance based on each individual’s care plan

Refusal to perform personal care duties is considered non-compliance with job expectations.

Supervision and Safety

Staff must maintain a safe and controlled environment at all times by:

  • Providing continuous supervision

  • Monitoring behavior, health, and emotional well-being

  • Preventing elopement, injury, neglect, and unsafe situations

  • Responding immediately to medical emergencies, behavioral incidents, and safety hazards

  • Following emergency procedures, including fire evacuation, medical response, and crisis intervention

Cleaning and Sanitation

All staff are responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitary facility, including:

  • Cleaning bathrooms, activity areas, and common spaces

  • Disinfecting surfaces

  • Disposing of diapers, gloves, and biohazard materials properly

  • Following infection control procedures

  • Using PPE when required

No staff member is exempt from cleaning duties.

Transportation Support

Staff involved in transportation must:

  • Safely transport individuals to and from homes, program locations, and community activities

  • Ensure seatbelt use

  • Assist with safe entry and exit from vehicles

  • Supervise individuals during transport

  • Respond to behavioral or medical needs during transit

Transportation is considered an extension of direct care.

Documentation

Staff must complete accurate and timely documentation, including:

  • Daily service notes

  • Incident reports

  • Records of services provided

  • Behavioral or health concerns

  • Documentation required for agency and state compliance

Falsification or failure to complete documentation is a serious violation.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must be able and willing to:

  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, assisting individuals, and standing for extended periods

  • Provide personal care, including toileting and diaper changing

  • Participate in cleaning and sanitation duties

  • Complete required trainings such as CPR, First Aid, MANE, Incident Reporting, Infection Control, Behavior Management, and QMAP if applicable

  • Hold a valid driver’s license if assigned transportation duties

Work Conditions

This position may involve:

  • Exposure to bodily fluids

  • Exposure to biohazard materials

  • Physically demanding activities

  • High-responsibility supervision

  • High-stress behavioral situations

Staff must remain professional, calm, and attentive at all times.

Performance Expectations

All staff are expected to:

  • Fully participate in all assigned duties without refusal

  • Work as part of a team

  • Follow policies, procedures, and care plans

  • Maintain professionalism, reliability, and punctuality

  • Remain actively engaged during shifts

Disqualification / Termination Conditions

Staff may be subject to disciplinary action, including termination, for:

  • Refusal to provide care

  • Failure to maintain supervision

  • Safety violations

  • Neglect or unsafe practices

  • Policy non-compliance

  • Abuse, neglect, or exploitation

  • Falsification of documentation

Final Statement

All staff are expected to function as Direct Support Professionals at all times while on duty, regardless of job title. Failure to meet these expectations may result in corrective action up to and including termination.
